About Umvuvu Tented Lodge & Campsite

Umvuvu Tented Lodge & Campsite is owned by Ron Pieterse and is located on a still backwater of the Zambezi River, about 24km east of Katima Mulilo.

Umvuvu is an African word for Hippo, closely related to the Lozi word Kubu, and was derived due to the presence of Hippo in the area.

Umvuvu Tented Lodge is one of the few campsites that will be accessible during extensive flooding of the Zambezi River, as a Mopane bridge has been built over the shallow mulapo (lower lying patch) that might have water.

Elephants on the island opposite is a common view during the winter season, and with the benches and picnic tables set up on the banks and all around camp, relaxing and leisure angling is the priority.

Basic meals can be supplied at this stage, while our Riverfront bar and restaurant are being constructed.

Accommodation:

Camping Sites:
Underneath the huge, shady indigenous trees, campsites have been cleared and fitted with benches and a built braai (BBQ). A modern ablution block is built, with male/female sides.

Tented Chalets:
4 completed luxury tented chalets are available, each en-suite.
Each chalet has a built braai (BBQ) and patio with table and chairs.

Activities:

Birding:

Because of the quiet waters in the Umvuvu Pool, more water birds can be found here, with African Jacana ever present.  Golden Oriole is common in the campsites, together with Schalow's Turaco (old name Livingstone Lourie), Robins, Open billed Storks and too many other birds to name.  This part of the Caprivi is known for its 450 species birds, and the tranquility of Umvuvu will have the  avid birdwatcher in a frantic tick-off.

Angling:
Tiger Fish, many Bream species, including Nembwe and threespot, as well as barble and squeaker can be caught from the bank.  Picnic places has been set along the bank, to enable the whole family to enjoy the experience.
UMVUVU SUPPORTS CATCH and RELEASE.

Nature Walks:
Natural walkways have been cleared enabling the guest to walk to walk safely between the huge trees, natural flowers and scrubs while enjoying the birdlife, squirrels and other animals.  You may be accompanied the whole trip by bejeweled dragonflies, waiting to be admired.

Boat Trips & Sunset Cruises:
Enjoy the beauty of the Zambezi from boat, view the crocodiles, hippo, many birds and natural activity from the river.  The Umvuvu Pool is connected to the main river  with it's glorious white sandbanks and wonderful atmosphere.
